Poster House, the first museum in the United States dedicated to the global history of posters, will host its monthly “First Friday” event November 1, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM at Poster House, 119 West 23rd Street in Manhattan. On the first Friday of every month, Poster House offers free admission and extended hours for guests to come explore the museum’s latest exhibitions. The two main exhibitions currently on display for the fall season are Just Frame It: How Nike Turned Sports Stars into Superheroes and Lester Beall & A New American Identity. Both exhibits will be open through February 23, 2025.

Every First Friday is different, offering unique opportunities such as tours, workshops, performances, and activities, to further engage visitors with the exhibitions on display. First Friday activities for November 1st include:

Try your hand at printmaking with the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop! Participants will learn to silkscreen a halftone print inspired by Poster House’s fall exhibition Lester Beall & A New American Identity. No previous experience necessary.

Multimedia artist Sabrina Sims will lead a monotype printmaking workshop, where participants will learn the process and techniques, including stenciling, masking, wet on-wet blending, and subtractive layering, that go along with printmaking. No experience necessary, all materials will be provided. Note: At the request of the instructor, masks are required for this workshop.

Join designer, educator, and type enthusiast Carrie Hamilton for a tour of Just Frame It: How Nike Turned Sports Stars into Superheroes. The tour will explore the ways in which the brand used bold, clear type and decorative elements to highlight the athletes’ strengths and personalities, and how the shoe company developed a strong brand presence that set it apart from the competition.

Join Poster House for a screening of the classic 1996 children’s film Space Jam, in conjunction with their fall exhibition Just Frame It: How Nike Turned Sports Stars into Superheroes.

Witness firsthand the incredible athleticism and camaraderie of Gotham Cheer, as they put on a one-of-a-kind performance inspired by Poster House’s fall exhibition Just Frame It: How Nike Turned Sports Stars into Superheroes. The performance will highlight resilience, diversity and the community spirit that drives sports.

Gotham Cheer is an inspirational adult cheerleading team established as a nonprofit organization to provide support to our community, with a specific focus on aiding homeless LGBTQ youth.

Free tickets can be reserved online in advance of November 1st. During normal hours, tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students, educators, veterans, and seniors. Poster House offers free museum admission through New York City’s public library Culture Pass system.
