“Spring was moving in the air above and in the earth below, filling each lowly burrow with its spirit of divine discontent and longing.” In 1908, at the height of the Industrial Revolution, Kenneth Grahame wrote The Wind in the Willows as a reflection on a bygone time, a nature-filled lifestyle that seemed to be rapidly disappearing. Over a century later, we city folk still long to escape to the countryside world of simple joys, where we are free to think, explore, and be idle. Grahame’s woodland critters are just like us: they emerge from their homes seeking adventure and good company; they make rookie mistakes and terrible blunders; and they are driven, as if by some ancient force, to appreciate and wonder at the world around them. With this story, we invite wayfarers of all ages to celebrate the precious beauty of the outdoors, and the fleeting chances we have to commune with the power of nature. Phoenix Theatre Ensemble’s new interactive adaptation of the Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows is a tale of river life and friendship. The adaptation is entertainment for all ages confirming the power of close friends and the courage to make a difference in the lives of others.
